Features of Bokutoh Hospital

Tokyo Metropolitan Bokutoh Hospital is a comprehensive hospital in eastern Tokyo including Sumida ward, Koto ward and Edogawa ward, with 1.45 million residents and function as a center of the area.

Due to the Number of healthcare facility is small in comparison to the population in this area. According to the survey conducted in October 2016, 80.2% of hospitalized patients and 82.7% of outpatient are the residents of these three wards.

Furthermore, since our hospital is the only one general hospital established by Tokyo Metropolitan government in the area, variety of medical functions like special health care and unprofitable medical services are being required. 

We have established an emergency and intensive care center (with 24 beds and step-down beds). Dedicated staff work 24-hours-a-day to provide emergency life support to tertiary emergency care patients.

An emergency department has been established in November 2001 to provide initial and secondary emergency care. In addition to the emergency and intensive care center, the “Tokyo ER Bokutoh” has also been set up. 

Furthermore, we have been designated for Advanced Critical Care Center in March 2016 to address the expectation to become the area’s core hospital for tertiary emergency care.

We are the hub for perinatal care in Tokyo Metropolitan area as a first comprehensive perinatal medical center in Tokyo municipal hospitals to provide advanced medical care and accept and coordinate transfers for high-risk pregnancies and newborns in order to address the falling birthrate.

The facility has a maternal-fetal intensive care unit (MFICU: 9 beds), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU: 15 beds), and growing care unit (GCU: 30 beds). We allocate first Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP)-certified nurses in Japan, as well as NICU inpatient children support coordinators to provide the families with support including home care.

In March 2017, we have been designated as a Comprehensive Perinatal Medical Center for Maternal Survival. 

There is a shortage of psychiatric treatment facilities particularly for psychiatric emergency care in the region. We provide such care for eight of Tokyo’s 23 wards, including out-of-hours admission for emergency measures observation, emergency compulsory admission, emergency admission, and admission for medical care and protection.

We also focus on support and consultations for social reintegration and offer a small-sized day care facility.

We provide various types of infectious disease care as a Designated Medical Institution for Class I and II Infectious Diseases as well as a regional treatment hub for HIV/AIDS.

We have been designated as a regional cancer treatment hospital in April 2017. By providing advanced multimodality treatment for cancer including five major cancer, offering a second opinion, running a cancer consultation support center and holding palliative care seminars, we promote the cancer care in Eastern Tokyo as well as commit to reducing regional health inequalities.

With the advanced specialized medical skills, our Rheumatology Department staff provide treatment for rheumatic diseases and intractable connective tissue-related diseases, which are increasing in prevalence each year. Intractable organ-specific diseases in the liver, kidneys, digestive system, or other organs are also treated by respective department.

The Dental/Oral Surgery Department provides dental treatment for disabled patients who require general anesthesia, which is not available at regular dentists. 

We have a cardiac catheter unit and intensive care unit. The Cardiovascular department and the Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery department provide advanced medical care including aortic aneurysm surgery.

The hybrid operating room which has been started to operate in March 2017 will enable to meet the growing demand for minimally invasive surgery such as stent graft procedure and TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) and contribute to the improvement of local medical services in the future.

Cerebrovascular diseases require immediate medical attention. The Neurological Surgery Department and Internal Medicine Department are mainly in charge of the treatment in cooperation with the Radiology Department by utilizing medical devices like MRI.
