Voluntary hospitalization occurs when a patient consents to being hospitalized based on the recommendations of a physician at Matsuzawa Hospital.
However, discharge may be restricted for up to 72 hours based on the judgment of a designated mental health physician.
Hospitalization for medical protection
A patient may be hospitalized without his or her consent if a designated mental health physician deems this necessary, provided that a member of the patient’s family consents to the hospitalization.
By ‘family members,’ the following parties are meant according to the Mental Health Act: (1)Patient’s spouse (2)Persons with parental rights (3)Persons responsible for supporting the patient(immediate blood relatives、siblings or third-degree relatives appointed by the court) (4)Guardian or caretaker
Emergency hospitalization
Emergency hospitalization involves the hospitalization of patients for up to 72 hours without the consent of their family if a designated mental health physician deems emergency hospitalization to be necessary.
Involuntary hospitalization
Involuntary hospitalization involves the hospitalization at the behest of the governor of patients with a mental disorder who pose a threat to themselves or to others and takes place if two or more designated mental health physicians ordered by the governor to perform an examination concur that hospitalization of the said patients is necessary.
Emergency involuntary hospitalization
In urgent cases of patients with a mental disorder posing a threat to themselves or to others who cannot be admitted to the hospital via the normal admission procedure, the said patients may be hospitalized for up to 72 hours based on the examination of one designated mental health physician.
2. Hospitalization in the general wards
Patients who are admitted for the treatment of a physical complaint will be housed in the general wards.
